Proactive fault detection in eVTOL design
Opal-RT

Designing electric aircraft, particularly eVTOLs, presents a wide range of challenges, from initial concept development to certification and maintenance. Opal- RT helps companies master these challenges by means of sound controller testing using innovative hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation. The company’s demo at the expo will introduce a robust multi-core platform, augmented by FPGA-based solvers, demonstrating how HIL simulation can proactively identify design flaws and fault management issues before a physical prototype is even built. The focus is on two of the most critical systems in an eVTOL: the motor/inverter assembly and its power source, the battery.

The simulation is built using Simulink and features a multicore CPU battery model, integrated with motor control through advanced field-oriented control (FOC). This system manages four distinct inverter/motor pairs, with each pair's equations being precisely solved using an automatic FPGA model-generation tool. This approach ensures highly accurate and efficient simulations, helping to identify potential problems early and improving overall system reliability.
